This research project has been awarded as part of the research competition organized by Connect2Recover, which is a global initiative by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) with the priority of reinforcing and strengthening the digital infrastructure and ecosystems of developing countries. Carried out by an international and transdisciplinary research consortium, the project sets out to analyze the prospects of digital federation and data sharing within the context of Botswana. Considering the country’s stage of economic and digital development, the project team identified Botswana’s smallholder agricultural sector as the most important area of digital transformation given the development need of the country’s primary sector.
Derived from semi-structured interviews, a focus group, as well as secondary research, the project team developed a digital transformation roadmap based on three development stages: (a) crowdfarming pilot, (b) crowdfarming marketplace, and (c) digital ecosystem for smallholder agriculture. Based on a detailed review of Botswana’s smallholder agriculture and the government’s digitalization strategy, the report envisions each phase, especially the pilot project, in terms of a minimal viable product. This is to consider the low level of digital penetration of Botswana’s primary sector, while providing an incentive to connect smallholders with consumers, traders, and retailers.
The project team has been successful in receiving commitment from actual smallholder farmers, the farmer association and government, as well as support for the idea of developing a crowdfarming marketplace as a novel production model and, eventually, a digital agriculture ecosystem for smallholder farmers, livestock producers, and agricultural technology companies and start-ups. The report is a proposal for a phase-one pilot project with the objective to advance smallholder agribusiness in Botswana.

In my research sabbatical I was working on three different topics, namely orthogonal polynomials in geometric modeling, re-parametrized univariate subdivision curves, and reconstruction of 3d-fish-models and other zoological artifacts. In the subsequent Sections, I will describe my particular activity in these different fields. The sections are meant to present an overview of my research activities, leaving out the technical details.
Section 1 is on orthogonal polynomials and other related generating systems for functions systems of smooth function.
In Section 2, I will discuss the application of various re-parametrization schemes for interpolatory subdivision algorithms for the generation of space curves.
The next Section 3 is concerned with my research at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, in collaboration with Dr. Ulrike Siebeck from the School of Biomedical Sciences on fish behavior and reconstruction of 3d-fish models in particular.
In the last Section 4, I will describe what effects this research will have on in my subsequent teaching at the University of Applied Science Konstanz (HTWG).
One way of reducing carbon emissions is to reduce carbon emissions from consumption. Quantitative information about these emissions helps to better understand the reduction potential. This article aims to provide carbon footprint data for students of the University of Applied Science in Konstanz, Germany. The study includes almost 10% of the University’s students. Data on emission patterns was collected via questionnaires and calculated by a web-based carbon calculator. The study analyses personal carbon footprints and, more detailed, carbon emissions from consumption categories heating, electricity, mobility (land travel and aviation) and food. The findings show average students’ annual carbon footprint to be10.9t CO2eq and in the same order of magnitude as the German average. While students cause less emissions through heating because of smaller living space per person, they cause significantly more emissions by aviation. Female students tend to have higher emissions from aviation, instead male students have higher emissions from food (due to more meat in their diet). Business students have higher emissions than others, mainly because they are tending to fly more. The student carbon footprint is far above climate protection goals formulated for 2050.
Navigation on the Danube

This report contains two parts: The first part presents an overview on studies concerning the Danube, inland navigation or the impact of climate change on either of those. The second part gives a more detailed analysis of inland navigation on the Danube, partly based on studies presented in part one. Part two covers the current situation along the Danube by covering the topic of bottlenecks and other limitations for shipping along the Danube. Based on these informations, an estimation of the economic impacts of low water periods on inland navigation is made. As a last step, measures to reduce the impact of low water on inland navigations are presented. The report shows, that inland navigation still is an important transport mode, along the Danube as well as in other european regions. Especially in Romania, inland navigation still has a large share of more than 20% and rising in total transport. However, inland navigation depends strongly on good conditions of its infrastructure. These good conditions are limited mainly by two factors: one are the so called bottlenecks. Those are areas with sub-optimal shipping conditions e.g. due to solid rock formations in the river that lead to a reduced water depths. The other factor is the weather (and, on a longer time scale, the climate) which, mostly depending on precipitation and evaporation, can lead to low water levels seasonally. In addition to these two natural factors, laws which e.g. regulate the maximum number of barges allowed. Human build structures like locks limit the size of vessels as well as the speed they can travel with. These limiting factors are identified and located in the first chapter of part two of this report, before the water depth needed by several ship sizes as well as the cargo fleet available along the Danube are presented. One of the targets of this report is to estimate the economic impact of low water periods. All the factors named above as well as the freight prices charged for connections along the Danube are used to each this target in chapter II.4. To estimate the impact of low water periods on the freight prices, a method developed by Jonkeren et al. (2007) for the Rhine is transfered to the Danube. By transfering Jonkeren et al. (2007) method, regression equations for several transport connections along the Danube are identified that give a first estimate for the connection of freight prices and water levels. With the help of these regression equations, an estimation of the total expenses for transport via inland navigation for several years is possible. The yearly and seasonal variability is identified as well as the additional expenses due to water levels below 280cm. But additional expenses are not the only impact of changing water levels on inland navigation. Another is, that while the demand for transport stays at the same level, sometimes the water levels are not sufficient enough to use the full capacity of the fleet. Therefore, the (theoretical) amount of cargo that could not be transported due to low water levels is calculated as well and presented in chapter II.5. Finally, some measures to overcome some of the here named problems of inland navigation due to low water levels are presented. These are separated into two general approches: change the ship or change the river. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages due to technical as well as regulatory and other factors. The list presented here however is incomplete and only gives a few ideas of how some problems can be overcome. In the end, an individual mix for the different regions along the river and sometimes for the individual companies must be found.
Earthquake response spectra as defined by Eurocode 8 (German NAD) are restricted to soils with shear wave velocities greater than 150 m/s. For soft soil layers e.g. of clay underlain by bedrock special investigations are required because resonance effects of the layer significantly influence the shape of the spectrum. Numerical investigations are normally based on a one-dimensional theory of horizontally polarized shear waves propagating in vertical direction. The paper describes a parametric study to define acceleration response spectra for a soft soil over a half-space for a wide range of soil layer heights and material parameters. Based on this study a simplified method to describe response spectra for the model of a soft soil layer underlain by a viscoelastic halfspace is given.
