Seminar "Konstruktiver Denkmalschutz" - Berlin 2003

Seminar "Constructive Monumental Protection" - Berlin 2003

Jahrhunderts.
  • Renovation of older buildings gains in the practice of construction continuously in importance whereas the building volume in new buildings is diminishing. This trend is given an increasing attention in the course of Architecture in the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences. Thus in the summer half year of 2003 lecturer Architect Roger Karbe (Berlin) and Professor Cengiz Dicleli (Konstanz) carried out the seminar “Constructive Monumental Protection.” Five monumentally protected buildings of world class, which have already been successfully restored, modernized and partly given a new function, have been investigated and analyzed under constructive and functional aspects of monumental protection. These are the Hamburger Bahnhof, the Altes Museum, the Langhans Building in the Charlottenburger Schloss, the ferry building on the Pfauen Island and Stüler’s Neues Museum, which at the moment is being restored and modernized by the English architect David Chipperfield. Considerations regarding the maintenance and protection of the historical building substance are often raised too little, too late or not at all. That’s why many extraordinary buildings have already been lost. The idea of total conservation of historical buildings offers seldom a mean-ingful solution. The exclusion of any change leaves at the end no place for a meaningful us-age. If the originally planned utilizations are going to change or evolve, then before beginning with any task it should be carefully examined how much the buildings can be brought into play for new usage requirements. The aim of the course is to put the respective buildings in their historical context. Then the main focus will be on the constructive interrelations. Thereby as far as possible all the initial conditions will be considered: site selection, building ground, building time, building material, building methods, technical equipment and cost relevancy. This will be followed by a deep-ened study of the mutual effects with the original usages and a link to the understanding of the special correlation between construction and function as seen at the historical buildings. At the same time the architects of the future have to learn to critically question themselves and their creative talents. Only a broad knowledge of the historical and constructive interrela-tionships will give them the possibilities for their own positioning. Under the conditions of a reconstruction of the historical buildings with a preserving approach to the existing substance as high as possible, both, the economical interests of the investors as well as the requirements of monumental protection can be served. With the selected buildings in Berlin all of which are under monumental protection the stu-dents of architecture were able to study the beginnings of different reutilizations which have followed and the resulting reconstructions. The buildings offer an abstract of the history of construction and culture of Prussia during a period of 100 years between the end of the 18th century and the end of the 19th century.
