Requirements Engineering in Business Analytics for Innovation and Product Lifecycle Management

Considering Requirements Engineering (RE) in business analytics, involving market oriented management, computer science and statistics, may be valuable for managing innovation in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). RE and business analytics can help maximize the value of corporate product information throughout the value chain starting with innovation management. Innovation and PLM must address 1) big data, 2) development of well-defined business goals and principles, 3) cost/benefit analysis, 4) continuous change management, and 5) statistical and report science. This paper is a positioning note that addresses some business case considerations for analytics project involving PLM data, patents, and innovations. We describe a number of research challenges in RE that addresses business analytics when high PLM data should be turned into a successful market oriented innovation management strategy. We provide a draft on how to address these research challenges.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend towards a general contractor strategy for plant engineering companies. Multiple disciplines and departments must be administered in a joint project. In the process, different work results are often managed in various systems without any associative relationship. A possible way to address this complexity is to implement a specifically tailored PLM strategy to gain a competitive advantage. Maturity models as well as methods to evaluate possible benefits constitute increasingly applied tools during this journey. Both methods have been theoretically described in previous publications. However, this paper should provide insights in the practical application within machinery industry. Therefore, a medium-sized German plant engineering company serves as an example for determining the scope and value of a multi-national overarching Product Lifecycle Management architecture as the central piece of a future digitalization strategy. The company’s current maturity levels for several digitalization capabilities are evaluated, prioritized and benchmarked against a set of similar companies. This allows to derive suitable target states in terms of maturity levels as well as the technical specification of digitalization use cases. In order to provide profound data for cost justification the resulting benefits are quantified.
Digitalization is one of the most frequently discussed topics in industry. New technologies, platform concepts and integrated data models do enable disruptive business models and drive changes in organization, processes, and tools. The goal is to make a company more efficient, productive and ultimately profitable. However, many companies are facing the challenge of how to approach digital transformation in a structured way and to realize these potential benefits. What they realize is that Product Lifecycle Management plays a key role in digitalization intends, as object, structure and process management along the life cycle is a foundation for many digitalization use cases. The introduced maturity model for assessing a firm’s capabilities along the product lifecycle has been used almost two hundred times. It allows a company to compare its performance with an industry specific benchmark to reveal individual strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, an empirical study produced multidimensional correlation coefficients, which identify dependencies between business model characteristics and the maturity level of capabilities.
In the last decade, both sustainability (Green &
Blue Economies) and business models for sustainability
(BMfS) have increased in importance. Social life cycle
sustainability assessment has not fully achieved goal,
mainly because sustainability‐oriented business is very
complex and dynamic. System Dynamics (SD) is a powerful
methodology and computer simulation modeling technique
for framing, understanding and discussing complex issues
and problems. This paper responds to the urgent need for
a new business model by presenting a concept for dynamic
business modeling for sustainability using system dynamics.
The paper illustrates the key operating principles through
an application from the smartphone industry with help
from STELLA® software for simulation. Simulations
suggest that dynamic business modeling for sustainability
may contribute to sustainable business model research and
practice by introducing a systemic design tool that frames
environmental, social, and economic drivers of value
generation into a dynamic business model causal feedback
structure, therefore overcoming shortcomings of current
business models when applied to complex systems.
Despite the importance of Social Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (S-LCSA), little research has addressed its integration into Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. This paper presents a structured review of relevant research and practice. Also, to address practical aspects in more detail, it focuses on challenges and potential for adoption of such an integrated system at an electronics company.
We began by reviewing literature on implementations of Social-LCSA and identifying research needs. Then we investigated the status of Social-LCSA within the electronics industry, both by reviewing literature and interviewing decision makers, to identify challenges and the potential for adopting S-LCSA at an electronics company. We found low maturity of Social-LCSA, particularly difficulty in quantifying social sustainability. Adoption of Social-LCSA was less common among electronics industry suppliers, especially mining & smelting plants. Our results could provide a basis for conducting case studies that could further clarify issues involved in integrations of Social-LCSA into PLM systems.
It is widely recognized that sustainability is a new challenge for many manufacturing companies. In this paper, we tackle this issue by presenting an approach that deals with material and substance compliance within Product Lifecycle Management in a complex value chain. Our analysis explains why, how and when sustainable manufacturing arises, and it identifies, quantifies and evaluates the environmental impact of a new product. We propose (I) a Life Cycle Assessment tool (LCA) and (II) a model to validate this approach and evaluate the risk of non-compliance in supply chain. Our LCA approach provides comprehensive information on environmental impacts of a product.
Product and materials cycles are parallel and intersecting, making it challenging to integrate Material Selection Process across Product Lifecycle Management, Integration of LCA with PLM. We provide only a foundation. Further research in systems engineering is necessary. LCA is sensitive to data quality. Outsourcing production and having problems in supplier cooperation can result in material mismatch (such as property, composition mismatching) in the production process due to that may cause misleading of LCA results. This paper also describes research challenges using risk-based due diligence.

Product development and product manufacturing are entering a new era, namely an era where engineering tasks are executed under collaboration of all involved parties. Engineers and potential customers work together mainly in a virtual world for the design and realization of the product. We address this so called “crowdsourcing” trend in the automotive industry that lowers cost and accelerates production of new car. Current practice and prior studies fail to handle data management and collaboration aspects in sufficient detail. We propose a PLM based crowdsourcing platform that applies best practices to the established approach and adapt it with new methods for handling specific requirements. Our work provides a basis for establishing an improved collaboration platform to support a Gig Economy in the automotive industry.
The development of a new product can be accelerated by using an approach called crowdsourcing. The engineers compete and try their best to provide the related solution based on the given product requirement submitted in the online crowdsourcing platform. The one who has submitted the best solution get a financial reward. This approach is proven to be three time faster than the conventional one. However, the crowdsourcing process is usually not transparent to a new user. The risk for the execution of a new project for developing a new product is not easy to be calculated [1, 2]. We developed a method InnoCrowd to handle this problem and the new user could use during the planning of a new product development project. This system uses AI concepts to generate a knowledgebase representing histories of successful product development projects. The system uses the knowledge to determine qualitative and quantitative risks of a new project. This paper describes the new method, the InnoCrowd design, and results of a validation experiment based on data from a current crowdsourcing platform. Finally, we compare InnoCrowd to related methods and systems in terms of design and benefits.
