Algorithms for calculating the string edit distance are used in e.g. information retrieval and document analysis systems or for evaluation of text recognizers. Text recognition based on CTC-trained LSTM networks includes a decoding step to produce a string, possibly using a language model, and evaluation using the string edit distance. The decoded string can further be used as a query for database search, e.g. in document retrieval. We propose to closely integrate dictionary search with text recognition to train both combined in a continuous fashion. This work shows that LSTM networks are capable of calculating the string edit distance while allowing for an exchangeable dictionary to separate learned algorithm from data. This could be a step towards integrating text recognition and dictionary search in one deep network.
Digital cameras are subject to physical, electronic and optic effects that result in errors and noise in the image. These effects include for example a temperature dependent dark current, read noise, optical vignetting or different sensitivities of individual pixels. The task of a radiometric calibration is to reduce these errors in the image and thus improve the quality of the overall application. In this work we present an algorithm for radiometric calibration based on Gaussian processes. Gaussian processes are a regression method widely used in machine learning that is particularly useful in our context. Then Gaussian process regression is used to learn a temperature and exposure time dependent mapping from observed gray-scale values to true light intensities for each pixel. Regression models based on the characteristics of single pixels suffer from excessively high runtime and thus are unsuitable for many practical applications. In contrast, a single regression model for an entire image with high spatial resolution leads to a low quality radiometric calibration, which also limits its practical use. The proposed algorithm is predicated on a partitioning of the pixels such that each pixel partition can be represented by one single regression model without quality loss. Partitioning is done by extracting features from the characteristic of each pixel and using them for lexicographic sorting. Splitting the sorted data into partitions with equal size yields the final partitions, each of which is represented by the partition centers. An individual Gaussian process regression and model selection is done for each partition. Calibration is performed by interpolating the gray-scale value of each pixel with the regression model of the respective partition. The experimental comparison of the proposed approach to classical flat field calibration shows a consistently higher reconstruction quality for the same overall number of calibration frames.
Visualization-Assisted Development of Deep Learning Models in Offline Handwriting Recognition
(2018)
Deep learning is a field of machine learning that has been the focus of active research and successful applications in recent years. Offline handwriting recognition is one of the research fields and applications were deep neural networks have shown high accuracy. Deep learning models and their training pipeline show a large amount of hyper-parameters in their data selection, transformation, network topology and training process that are sometimes interdependent. This increases the overall difficulty and time necessary for building and training a model for a specific data set and task at hand. This work proposes a novel visualization-assisted workflow that guides the model developer through the hyper-parameter search in order to identify relevant parameters and modify them in a meaningful way. This decreases the overall time necessary for building and training a model. The contributions of this work are a workflow for hyper-parameter search in offline handwriting recognition and a heat map based visualization technique for deep neural networks in multi-line offline handwriting recognition. This work applies to offline handwriting recognition, but the general workflow can possibly be adapted to other tasks as well.
Increasing robustness of handwriting recognition using character N-Gram decoding on large lexica
(2016)
Offline handwriting recognition systems often include a decoding step, that is retrieving the most likely character sequence from the underlying machine learning algorithm. Decoding is sensitive to ranges of weakly predicted characters, caused e.g. by obstructions in the scanned document. We present a new algorithm for robust decoding of handwriting recognizer outputs using character n-grams. Multidimensional hierarchical subsampling artificial neural networks with Long-Short-Term-Memory cells have been successfully applied to offline handwriting recognition. Output activations from such networks, trained with Connectionist Temporal Classification, can be decoded with several different algorithms in order to retrieve the most likely literal string that it represents. We present a new algorithm for decoding the network output while restricting the possible strings to a large lexicon. The index used for this work is an n-gram index with tri-grams used for experimental comparisons. N-grams are extracted from the network output using a backtracking algorithm and each n-gram assigned a mean probability. The decoding result is obtained by intersecting the n-gram hit lists while calculating the total probability for each matched lexicon entry. We conclude with an experimental comparison of different decoding algorithms on a large lexicon.
Offline handwriting recognition systems often use LSTM networks, trained with line- or word-images. Multi-line text makes it necessary to use segmentation to explicitly obtain these images. Skewed, curved, overlapping, incorrectly written text, or noise can lead to errors during segmentation of multi-line text and reduces the overall recognition capacity of the system. Last year has seen the introduction of deep learning methods capable of segmentation-free recognition of whole paragraphs. Our method uses Conditional Random Fields to represent text and align it with the network output to calculate a loss function for training. Experiments are promising and show that the technique is capable of training a LSTM multi-line text recognition system.
Multi-Dimensional Connectionist Classification is amethod for weakly supervised training of Deep Neural Networksfor segmentation-free multi-line offline handwriting recognition.MDCC applies Conditional Random Fields as an alignmentfunction for this task. We discuss the structure and patterns ofhandwritten text that can be used for building a CRF. Since CRFsare cyclic graphical models, we have to resort to approximateinference when calculating the alignment of multi-line text duringtraining, here in the form of Loopy Belief Propagation. This workconcludes with experimental results for transcribing small multi-line samples from the IAM Offline Handwriting DB which showthat MDCC is a competitive methodology.
Recent years have seen the proposal of several different gradient-based optimization methods for training artificial neural networks. Traditional methods include steepest descent with momentum, newer methods are based on per-parameter learning rates and some approximate Newton-step updates. This work contains the result of several experiments comparing different optimization methods. The experiments were targeted at offline handwriting recognition using hierarchical subsampling networks with recurrent LSTM layers. We present an overview of the used optimization methods, the results that were achieved and a discussion of why the methods lead to different results.
Nowadays, the inexpensive memory space promotes an accelerating growth of stored image data. To exploit the data using supervised Machine or Deep Learning, it needs to be labeled. Manually labeling the vast amount of data is time-consuming and expensive, especially if human experts with specific domain knowledge are indispensable. Active learning addresses this shortcoming by querying the user the labels of the most informative images first. One way to obtain the ‘informativeness’ is by using uncertainty sampling as a query strategy, where the system queries those images it is most uncertain about how to classify. In this paper, we present a web-based active learning framework that helps to accelerate the labeling process. After manually labeling some images, the user gets recommendations of further candidates that could potentially be labeled equally (bulk image folder shift). We aim to explore the most efficient ‘uncertainty’ measure to improve the quality of the recommendations such that all images are sorted with a minimum number of user interactions (clicks). We conducted experiments using a manually labeled reference dataset to evaluate different combinations of classifiers and uncertainty measures. The results clearly show the effectiveness of an uncertainty sampling with bulk image shift recommendations (our novel method), which can reduce the number of required clicks to only around 20% compared to manual labeling.

Manual for Urban Design
Urban design is based on planning and design principles that need to meet functional demands on the one hand, but on the other hand bring the design elements together into a distinctive whole. The basic compositional principles are, for the most part, timeless. Designing Cities examines the most important design and presentation principles of urban design, using historical examples and contemporary international competition entries designed by practices including Foster + Partners, KCAP Architects & Planners, MVRDV, and OMA.
At the core of the publication is the question of how the projects were designed and what methods and tools were available to the designer: such as parametric design, in which variable parameters automatically influence the design and provide a range of possible solutions.
- Tools for urban design
- Current projects and award-winning competition entries by renowned international practices
- A textbook for students and a practical design aid for practicing architects and planners

Stadt entwerfen
(2018)

So is About Urbanity
(2016)
Südstadt Tübingen is a successful military land redevelopment project, in which functional mix and urban diversity have been identified as main goals. In the whole development process, joint building venture has been utilized as important urban development instrument. On one hand, this instrument helps citizens development adaptive and affordable living space and let them find own identity to the new quarter; on the other hand, it is also important to cultivate urban diversity and suitable spatial feeling, mix relationship in living and working conditions, so that the quarters will have very flexible structure to accommodate diversified urban life styles.
Cardiovascular diseases are directly or indirectly responsible for up to 38.5% of all deaths in Germany and thus represent the most frequent cause of death. At present, heart diseases are mainly discovered by chance during routine visits to the doctor or when acute symptoms occur. However, there is no practical method to proactively detect diseases or abnormalities of the heart in the daily environment and to take preventive measures for the person concerned. Long-term ECG devices, as currently used by physicians, are simply too expensive, impractical, and not widely available for everyday use. This work aims to develop an ECG device suitable for everyday use that can be worn directly on the body. For this purpose, an already existing hardware platform will be analyzed, and the corresponding potential for improvement will be identified. A precise picture of the existing data quality is obtained by metrological examination, and corresponding requirements are defined. Based on these identified optimization potentials, a new ECG device is developed. The revised ECG device is characterized by a high integration density and combines all components directly on one board except the battery and the ECG electrodes. The compact design allows the device to be attached directly to the chest. An integrated microcontroller allows digital signal processing without the need for an additional computer. Central features of the evaluation are a peak detection for detecting R-peaks and a calculation of the current heart rate based on the RR interval. To ensure the validity of the detected R-peaks, a model of the anatomical conditions is used. Thus, unrealistic RR-intervals can be excluded. The wireless interface allows continuous transmission of the calculated heart rate. Following the development of hardware and software, the results are verified, and appropriate conclusions about the data quality are drawn. As a result, a very compact and wearable ECG device with different wireless technologies, data storage, and evaluation of RR intervals was developed. Some tests yelled runtimes up to 24 hours with wireless Lan activated and streaming.
While driving, stress is caused by situations in which the driver estimates their ability to manage the driving demands as insufficient or loses the capability to handle the situation. This leads to increased numbers of driver mistakes and traffic violations. Additional stressing factors are time pressure, road conditions, or dislike for driving. Therefore, stress affects driver and road safety. Stress is classified into two categories depending on its duration and the effects on the body and psyche: short-term eustress and constantly present distress, which causes degenerative effects. In this work, we focus on distress. Wearable sensors are handy tools for collecting biosignals like heart rate, activity, etc. Easy installation and non-intrusive nature make them convenient for calculating stress. This study focuses on the investigation of stress and its implications. Specifically, the research conducts an analysis of stress within a select group of individuals from both Spain and Germany. The primary objective is to examine the influence of recognized psychological factors, including personality traits such as neuroticism, extroversion, psychoticism, stress and road safety. The estimation of stress levels was accomplished through the collection of physiological parameters (R-R intervals) using a Polar H10 chest strap. We observed that personality traits, such as extroversion, exhibited similar trends during relaxation, with an average heart rate 6% higher in Spain and 3% higher in Germany. However, while driving, introverts, on average, experienced more stress, with rates 4% and 1% lower than extroverts in Spain and Germany, respectively.
In previous studies, we used a method for detecting stress that was based exclusively on heart rate and ECG for differentiation between such situations as mental stress, physical activity, relaxation, and rest. As a response of the heart to these situations, we observed different behavior in the Root Mean Square of the Successive differences heartbeats (RMSSD). This study aims to analyze Virtual Reality via a virtual reality headset as an effective stressor for future works. The value of the Root Mean Square of the Successive Differences is an important marker for the parasympathetic effector on the heart and can provide information about stress. For these measurements, the RR interval was collected using a breast belt. In these studies, we can observe the Root Mean Square of the successive differences heartbeats. Additional sensors for the analysis were not used. We conducted experiments with ten subjects that had to drive a simulator for 25 minutes using monitors and 25 minutes using virtual reality headset. Before starting and after finishing each simulation, the subjects had to complete a survey in which they had to describe their mental state. The experiment results show that driving using virtual reality headset has some influence on the heart rate and RMSSD, but it does not significantly increase the stress of driving.
To evaluate the quality of sleep, it is important to determine how much time was spent in each sleep stage during the night. The gold standard in this domain is an overnight polysomnography (PSG). But the recording of the necessary electrophysiological signals is extensive and complex and the environment of the sleep laboratory, which is unfamiliar to the patient, might lead to distorted results. In this paper, a sleep stage detection algorithm is proposed that uses only the heart rate signal, derived from electrocardiogram (ECG), as a discriminator. This would make it possible for sleep analysis to be performed at home, saving a lot of effort and money. From the heart rate, using the fast Fourier transformation (FFT), three parameters were calculated in order to distinguish between the different sleep stages. ECG data along with a hypnogram scored by professionals was used from Physionet database, making it easy to compare the results. With an agreement rate of 41.3%, this approach is a good foundation for future research.
Stress is recognized as a factor of predominant disease and in the future the costs for treatment will increase. The presented approach tries to detect stress in a very basic and easy to implement way, so that the cost for the device and effort to wear it remain low. The user should benefit from the fact that the system offers an easy interface reporting the status of his body in real time. In parallel, the system provides interfaces to pass the obtained data forward for further processing and (professional) analyses, in case the user agrees. The system is designed to be used in every day’s activities and it is not restricted to laboratory use or environments. The implementation of the enhanced prototype shows that the detection of stress and the reporting can be managed using correlation plots and automatic pattern recognition even on a very light-weighted microcontroller platform.
Stress and physical activities are important aspects of life of people. Body reactions on stress and on physical activities can be very similar but long-term stress leads to diseases and damages the body. Currently there is no method to differentiate easily and clearly between these two aspects in a time slot. We have confronted this problem while developing a mobile system for detection and analysis of stress. This paper presents an approach, which uses a long-term monitor with ECG/EKG capabilities and analysis of the heart rate data that is extracted from the device. The focus of the work is to find characteristics that are useful for differentiation between physical activity and stress.
Stress is recognized as a predominant disease with raising costs for rehabilitation and treatment. Currently there several different approaches that can be used for determining and calculating the stress levels. Usually the methods for determining stress are divided in two categories. The first category do not require any special equipment for measuring the stress. This category useless the variation in the behaviour patterns that occur while stress. The core disadvantage for the category is their limitation to specific use case. The second category uses laboratories instruments and biological sensors. This category allow to measure stress precisely and proficiently but on the same time they are not mobile and transportable and do not support real-time feedback. This work presents a mobile system that provides the calculation of stress. For achieving this, the of a mobile ECG sensor is analysed, processed and visualised over a mobile system like a smartphone. This work also explains the used stress measurement algorithm. The result of this work is a portable system that can be used with a mobile system like a smartphone as visual interface for reporting the current stress level.
The perception of the amount of stress is subjective to every person, and the perception of it changes depending on many factors. One of the factors that has an impact on perceived stress is the emotional state. In this work, we compare the emotional state of 40 German driving students and present different partitions that can be advantageous for using artificial intelligence and classification. Like this, we evaluate the data quality and prepare for the specific use. The Stress Perceived Questionnaire (PSQ20) was employed to assess the level of stress experienced by individuals while participating in a driving simulation for 5 and 25 min. As a result of our analysis, we present a categorisation of various emotional states into intervals, comparing different classifications and facilitating a more straightforward implementation of artificial intelligence for classification purposes.
The investigation of stress requires to distinguish between stress caused by physical activity and stress that is caused by psychosocial factors. The behaviour of the heart in response to stress and physical activity is very similar in case the set of monitored parameters is reduced to one. Currently, the differentiation remains difficult and methods which only use the heart rate are not able to differentiate between stress and physical activity, without using additional sensor data input. The approach focusses on methods which generate signals providing characteristics that are useful for detecting stress, physical activity, no activity and relaxation.
Methods based exclusively on heart rate hardly allow to differentiate between physical activity, stress, relaxation, and rest, that is why an additional sensor like activity/movement sensor added for detection and classification. The response of the heart to physical activity, stress, relaxation, and no activity can be very similar. In this study, we can observe the influence of induced stress and analyze which metrics could be considered for its detection. The changes in the Root Mean Square of the Successive Differences provide us with information about physiological changes. A set of measurements collecting the RR intervals was taken. The intervals are used as a parameter to distinguish four different stages. Parameters like skin conductivity or skin temperature were not used because the main aim is to maintain a minimum number of sensors and devices and thereby to increase the wearability in the future.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of perceived stress on traffic and road safety. One of the leading causes of stress among drivers is the feeling of having a lack of control during the driving process. Stress can result in more traffic accidents, an increase in driver errors, and an increase in traffic violations. To study this phenomenon, the Stress Perceived Questionnaire (PSQ) was used to evaluate the perceived stress while driving in a simulation. The study was conducted with participants from Germany, and they were grouped into different categories based on their emotional stability. Each participant was monitored using wearable devices that measured their instantaneous heart rate (HR). The preference for wearable devices was due to their non-intrusive and portable nature. The results of this study provide an overview of how stress can affect traffic and road safety, which can be used for future research or to implement strategies to reduce road accidents and promote traffic safety.
The principal objective of this study is to investigate the impact of perceived stress on traffic and road safety. Therefore, we designed a study that allows the generation and collection of stress-relevant data. Drivers often experience stress due to their perception of lack of control during the driving process. This can lead to an increased likelihood of traffic accidents, driver errors, and traffic violations. To explore this phenomenon, we used the Stress Perceived Questionnaire (PSQ) to evaluate perceived stress levels during driving simulations and the EPQR questionnaire to determine the personality of the driver. With the presented study, participants can categorised based on their emotional stability and personality traits. Wearable devices were utilised to monitor each participant's instantaneous heart rate (HR) due to their non-intrusive and portable nature. The findings of this study deliver an overview of the link between stress and traffic and road safety. These findings can be utilised for future research and implementing strategies to reduce road accidents and promote traffic safety.
Stress is a recognized as a predominant disease with growing costs of treatment. The approach presented here is aimed to detect stress using a light weighted, mobile, cheap and easy to use system. The result shows that stress can be detected even in case a person’s natural bio vital data is out of the main range. The system enables storage of measured data, while maintaining communication channels of online and post-processing.

The magneto-mechanical behavior of magnetic shape memory (MSM) materials has been investigated by means of different simulation and modeling approaches by several research groups. The target of this paper is to simulate actuators driven by MSM alloys and to understand the MSM element behavior during actuation, which shall lead to an increased performance of the actuator. Automobilantriebe im Wandel
(2011)
