Incremental one-class learning using regularized null-space training for industrial defect detection

One-class incremental learning is a special case of class-incremental learning, where only a single novel class is incrementally added to an existing classifier instead of multiple classes. This case is relevant in industrial defect detection scenarios, where novel defects usually appear during operation. Existing rolled-out classifiers must be updated incrementally in this scenario with only a few novel examples. In addition, it is often required that the base classifier must not be altered due to approval and warranty restrictions. While simple finetuning often gives the best performance across old and new classes, it comes with the drawback of potentially losing performance on the base classes (catastrophic forgetting [1]). Simple prototype approaches [2] work without changing existing weights and perform very well when the classes are well separated but fail dramatically when not. In theory, null-space training (NSCL) [3] should retain the basis classifier entirely, as parameter updates are restricted to the null space of the network with respect to existing classes. However, as we show, this technique promotes overfitting in the case of one-class incremental learning. In our experiments, we found that unconstrained weight growth in null space is the underlying issue, leading us to propose a regularization term (R-NSCL) that penalizes the magnitude of amplification. The regularization term is added to the standard classification loss and stabilizes null-space training in the one-class scenario by counteracting overfitting. We test the method’s capabilities on two industrial datasets, namely AITEX and MVTec, and compare the performance to state-of-the-art algorithms for class-incremental learning.
Using multi-camera matching techniques for 3d reconstruction there is usually the trade-off between the quality of the computed depth map and the speed of the computations. Whereas high quality matching methods take several seconds to several minutes to compute a depth map for one set of images, real-time methods achieve only low quality results. In this paper we present a multi-camera matching method that runs in real-time and yields high resolution depth maps. Our method is based on a novel multi-level combination of normalized cross correlation, deformed matching windows based on the multi-level depth map information, and sub-pixel precise disparity maps. The whole process is implemented completely on the GPU. With this approach we can process four 0.7 megapixel images in 129 milliseconds to a full resolution 3d depth map. Our technique is tailored for the recognition of non-technical shapes, because our target application is face recognition.
This paper broadens the resource-based approach to explaining survival of new technology-based firms (NTBFs) by focusing on the entrepreneur's ability to transform resources in response to triggers resulting from market interactions. Network theory is used to define a construct that allows determining the status of venture emergence (VE).The operationalization of the VE construct is built on the firm's value network maturity in the four market dimensions customer, investor, partner, and human resource. Business plans of NTBFs represent the artifact that contains this data in the form of transaction relation descriptions. Using content analysis, a multi-step combined human and computer coding process has been developed to empirically determine NTBFs' status of VE.Results of the business plan analysis suggests that the level of transaction relations allows to draw conclusions on the status of VE. Moreover, applying the developed process, a business plan coding test shows that the transaction relation based VE status significantly relates to NTBFs' survival capabilities.
Misbehave like Nobody’s Watching? Investor Attention to Corporate Misconduct and its Implications

With the advancement in sensor technology and the trend shift of health measurement from treatment after diagnosis to abnormalities detection long before the occurrence, the approach of turning private spaces into diagnostic spaces has gained much attention. In this work, we designed and implemented a low-cost and compact form factor module that can be deployed on the steering wheel of cars as well as most frequently touch objects at home in order to measure physiological signals from the fingertip of the subject as well as environmental parameters. We estimated the heart rate and SpO2 with the error of 2.83 bpm and 3.52%, respectively. The signal evaluation of skin temperature shows a promising output with respect to environmental recalibration. In addition, the electrodermal activity sensor followed the reference signal, appropriately which indicates the potential for further development and application in stress measurement.
The perception of the amount of stress is subjective to every person, and the perception of it changes depending on many factors. One of the factors that has an impact on perceived stress is the emotional state. In this work, we compare the emotional state of 40 German driving students and present different partitions that can be advantageous for using artificial intelligence and classification. Like this, we evaluate the data quality and prepare for the specific use. The Stress Perceived Questionnaire (PSQ20) was employed to assess the level of stress experienced by individuals while participating in a driving simulation for 5 and 25 min. As a result of our analysis, we present a categorisation of various emotional states into intervals, comparing different classifications and facilitating a more straightforward implementation of artificial intelligence for classification purposes.
Evaluation of a Contactless Accelerometer Sensor System for Heart Rate Monitoring During Sleep

The monitoring of a patient's heart rate (HR) is critical in the diagnosis of diseases. In the detection of sleep disorders, it also plays an important role. Several techniques have been proposed, including using sensors to record physiological signals that are automatically examined and analysed. This work aims to evaluate using a contactless HR monitoring system based on an accelerometer sensor during sleep. For this purpose, the oscillations caused by chest movements during heart contractions are recorded by an installation mounted under the bed mattress. The processing algorithm presented in this paper filters the signals and determines the HR. As a result, an average error of about 5 bpm has been documented, i.e., the system can be considered to be used for the forecasted domain.
In the digital age, information technology (IT) is a strategic asset for organizations. As a result, the IT costs are rising, and the cost-effective management of IT is crucial. Nevertheless, organizations still face major challenges and former studies lack comprehensiveness and depth. The goal of this paper is to generate a deep and holistic view on current management challenges of IT costs. In 15 expert interviews, we identify 23 challenges divided into 7 categories. The main challenges are to ensure transparency on IT cost information, to demonstrate the business impact of IT as well as to change the mindset for the value of IT and overcoming them requires attention to their interactions. Hence, this paper leads to a better understanding of the issues that IT cost management (ITCM) faces in the digital age and builds a base for future research.
Nowadays, organizations must invest strategically in information technology (IT) and choose the right digital initiatives to maximize their benefit. Nevertheless, Chief Information Officers still struggle to communicate IT costs and demonstrate the business value of IT. The goal of this paper is to support their effective communication. In focus groups, we analyzed how different stakeholders perceive IT costs and the business value of IT as the basis of communication. We identified 16 success factors to establish effective communication. Hence, this paper enables a better understanding of the perception and the operationalization of effective communication.
Prior quantitative research identified in the text of technology-based ventures' business plans distinctive performance patterns of evolving business models. Accordingly, interactions with customers, financiers, and people and the patenting strategy's status evolved and served as indicators of early-stage tech ventures' performance. With longitudinal data from five venture cases, this research sheds light on the evolving business model by validating the performance patterns, and elucidating how and why the ventures' business models evolved. Based on a generic systems theory framework for the indicators, the explanatory case studies re-contextualize the performance patterns taken from the snapshot perspective of business plans to the longitudinal perspective of technology-based ventures' life-cycle. This research confirms the relation of business model patterns of digital and non-digital ventures to the performance groups of failure, survival, or success and suggests a broader systems perspective for further research.
The digital transformation of business processes and the integration of IT systems leads to opportunities and risks for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Risks that can result in a lack of IT Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC). The purpose of this paper is to present the Design and Evaluation phase of creating an artefact, to reduce these risks. With this, the Design Science Research approach based on Hevner is using. The artefact will be developed by selecting relevant existing frameworks and the identification of SME-specific competencies. The method enables IT-GRC managers to transfer or adapt the frameworks to an SME organizational structure. The results from ten interviews and further three feedback loops showed that the method can be applied in practice and that a tailoring of established frameworks can take place. Contrary to the previous basic orientation of the research, this paper focuses on the concretization of approaches.
The random matrix approach is a robust algorithm to filter the mean and covariance matrix of noisy observations of a dynamic object. Afterward, virtual measurement models can be used to find iteratively the extent parameters of an object that would cause the same statistical moments within their measurements. In previous work, this was limited to elliptical targets and only contour measurements.In this paper, we introduce the parallel use of an elliptical, triangular and rectangular-shaped virtual measurement model and a shape classification that selects the model that fits best to the measurements. The measurement likelihood is modeled either via ray tracing, a uniformly or normally spatial distribution over the object’s extent or as a combination of those.The results show that the extent estimation works precisely and that the classification accuracy highly depends on the measurement noise.
Regional economies clearly benefit from thriving entrepreneurial ecosystems. However, ecosystems are not yet entirely gender-inclusive and therefore are not tapping their full potential. This is most critical with respect to technology-based entrepreneurship which features the largest gender imbalance. Despite the considerably growing amount of literature in the two research fields of female entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystems, the intersection of the two areas has not yet been outlined. We depict the state of knowledge with a structured review of the literature highlighting bibliometric information, methods used, and the main topics addressed in current articles. From there, recommendations for future research are derived.
Think BIQ: Gender Differences, Entrepreneurship Support and the Quality of Business Idea Description

Entrepreneurship support, its influencing factors and female entrepreneurship are recently discussed topics with great relevance for society and politics. However, research on the subject has been divergent in its results and lacks a focus on the impact of support programs’ characteristics concerning different types of entrepreneurs. Thus, we conduct a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis on entrepreneurship support characteristics aiming to shed light on possible gender differences occurring in respective programs. We investigate the quality of business idea descriptions, as a predecessor for a high-potential business model, operationalized using inter alia causation and effectuation theory and social role theory as possible explanations. In our fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis on a sample of 911 Norwegian ventures, we find a variety of differences related to the entrepreneurs’ gender. For instance, that financial support combined with a well described key contribution or careful planning seem to be more important antecedents for female entrepreneurs’ business idea quality than for males. Moreover, it seems a well-described key contribution has a positive effect on the outcome variable in most cases. Another interesting finding concerns the entrepreneurs’ network partners, where we found evident gender differences in our combinations. Female entrepreneurs seemingly benefitted from rather small networks, and males from big networks, although the former possess larger networks in the sample. In conclusion, we find that gender differences in combinations of entrepreneurship support for high business idea quality still occur even in a country like Norway, calling for an adaption of the provided support and environment.
Strategic renewal and the development of new types of innovation pose special challenges to established small and medium-sized companies. The paper at hand aims at answering the questions what the underlying mechanism of these challenges are and which approaches might help to properly counteracting them. This case study investigates the strategic renewal process and its corresponding interventions in a high-tech SME company during a four-year period. We analyse the findings in relation to existing frameworks for dynamic capabilities and strategic learning and provide new recommendations for practice and future research.
Research credits corporate entrepreneurship (CE) with enabling established companies to create new types of innovation. Scholars have focused on the organizational design of CE activities, proposing specific organizational units. These semi-autonomous units create a tense management situation between the core organization and its CE activities. Management and organization research considers control as a key managerial function for help. However, control has received limited research attention regarding CE units, leaving design issues for appropriate control of CE units unanswered. In this study, we link management control and CE to illustrate how control is understood in the context of CE. For this, we scanned the CE literature to identify underlying attributes and characteristics that allow specifying control for CE. We identified 11 attributes to describe control for CE activities in a first round and to derive future research paths.
Corporate Entrepreneurship (CE) units have become an increasingly important part of established companies’ development activities enabling them to also create more discontinuous innovations. As a result, companies have developed and implemented different forms of CE units, such as corporate accelerators, incubators, startup supplier programs, and corporate venture capital. Driven by the need to innovate, companies have even begun to use multiple CE units simultaneously. However, this has not been empirically investigated yet. Thus, with this study, we aim to shed some light on this by investigating the parallel use of multiple CE units in the German business landscape. We conducted an extensive desk research, combining, coding, and analyzing different sources. We found that 55 out of 165 large established companies have multiple CE units, which allowed us to characterize the parallel use and identify differences and similarities, e.g., in terms of industry, company size, and CE forms implemented. We conclude by presenting different implications for both practice and research and by pointing out directions for future research.
Spatial modulation (SM) is a low-complexity multiple-input/multiple-output transmission technique that combines index modulation and quadrature amplitude modulation for wireless communications. In this work, we consider the problem of link adaption for generalized spatial modulation (GSM) systems that use multiple active transmit antennas simultaneously. Link adaption algorithms require a real-time estimation of the link quality of the time-variant communication channels, e.g., by means of estimating the mutual information. However, determining the mutual information of SM is challenging because no closed-form expressions have been found so far. Recently, multilayer feedforward neural networks were applied to compute the achievable rate of an index modulation link. However, only a small SM system with two transmit and two receive antennas was considered. In this work, we consider a similar approach but investigate larger GSM systems with multiple active antennas. We analyze the portions of mutual information related to antenna selection and the IQ modulation processes, which depend on the GSM variant and the signal constellation.
Reliability is a crucial aspect of non-volatile NAND flash memories, and it is essential to thoroughly analyze the channel to prevent errors and ensure accurate readout. Es-timating the read reference voltages (RRV s) is a significant challenge due to the multitude of physical effects involved. The question arises which features are useful and necessary for the RRV estimation. Various possible features require specialized hardware or specific readout techniques to be usable. In contrast we consider sparse histograms based on the decision thresholds for hard-input and soft-input decoding. These offer a distinct advantage as they are derived directly from the raw readout data without the need for decoding. This paper focuses on the information-theoretic study of different features, especially on the exploration of the mutual information (MI) between feature vector and RRV. In particular, we investigate the dependency of the MI on the resolution of the histograms. With respect to the RRV estimation, sparse histograms provide sufficient information for near-optimum estimation.
Sleep is a multi-dimensional influencing factor on physical health, cognitive function, emotional well-being, mental health, daily performance, and productivity. The barriers such as time-consuming, invasiveness, and expense have caused a gradual shift in sleep monitoring from traditional and standard in-lab approach, e. g., polysomnography (PSG) to unobtrusive and noninvasive in-home sleep monitoring, yet further improvement is required. Despite an increasing interest in fiberoptic-based methods for cardiorespiratory estimation, the traditional mechanical-based sensors consist of force-sensitive resistors (FSR), lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric (PZT), and accelerometers yet serve as the dominant approach. The part of popularity lies in reducing the system’s complexity, expense, easy maintenance, and user-friendliness. However, care must be taken regarding the performance of such sensors with respect to accuracy and calibration.
Analysing observability is an important step in the
process of designing state feedback controllers. While for linear
systems observability has been widely studied and easy-to-check
necessary and sufficient conditions are available, for nonlinear
systems, such a general recipe does not exist and different classes
of systems require different techniques. In this paper, we analyse
observability for an industrial heating process where a stripe-
shaped plastic workpiece is moving through a heating zone where
it is heated up to a specific temperature by applying hot air to its
surface through a nozzle. A modeling approach for this process
is briefly presented, yielding a nonlinear Ordinary Differential
Equation model. Sensitivity-based observability analysis is used
to identify unobservable states and make suggestions for addi-
tional sensor locations. In practice, however, it is not possible
to place additional sensors, so the available measurements are
used to implement a simple open-loop state estimator with
offset compensation and numerical and experimental results are
presented.
Requirements Engineering in Business Analytics for Innovation and Product Lifecycle Management

Considering Requirements Engineering (RE) in business analytics, involving market oriented management, computer science and statistics, may be valuable for managing innovation in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). RE and business analytics can help maximize the value of corporate product information throughout the value chain starting with innovation management. Innovation and PLM must address 1) big data, 2) development of well-defined business goals and principles, 3) cost/benefit analysis, 4) continuous change management, and 5) statistical and report science. This paper is a positioning note that addresses some business case considerations for analytics project involving PLM data, patents, and innovations. We describe a number of research challenges in RE that addresses business analytics when high PLM data should be turned into a successful market oriented innovation management strategy. We provide a draft on how to address these research challenges.
Digitalization is one of the most frequently discussed topics in industry. New technologies, platform concepts and integrated data models do enable disruptive business models and drive changes in organization, processes, and tools. The goal is to make a company more efficient, productive and ultimately profitable. However, many companies are facing the challenge of how to approach digital transformation in a structured way and to realize these potential benefits. What they realize is that Product Lifecycle Management plays a key role in digitalization intends, as object, structure and process management along the life cycle is a foundation for many digitalization use cases. The introduced maturity model for assessing a firm’s capabilities along the product lifecycle has been used almost two hundred times. It allows a company to compare its performance with an industry specific benchmark to reveal individual strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, an empirical study produced multidimensional correlation coefficients, which identify dependencies between business model characteristics and the maturity level of capabilities.
Nowadays established companies use Corporate Entrepreneurship (CE) as a means to create discontinuous innovations. Many companies thereby even implement multiple CE units that typically involve several entrepreneurial activities. This explorative study aimed to identify the reasons why established companies implement multiple CE units concurrently. In conducting a comparative case study with eight companies from different industries, valuable insights for science and practice were gained. We provide an overview of different 11 reasons for implementing multiple CE units. This shows that the combination of CE units used by companies differs depending on the reason. It further allowed to derive general approaches of established companies to the implementation of CE units. Last, we identify the concept of co-specialization to be a central driver explaining the creation of the need to set up multiple units. We conclude by indicating implications and subjects for future research.
Entrepreneurial motivations have become a frequently discussed topic in entrepreneurship research. However, few studies investigated entrepreneurs' motivation across gender and different venture types and tend to rely on surveys or case studies. By using a text mining approach, we investigate if there are differences between male and female entrepreneurs' motivation and if female entrepreneurs' motivation differs across different venture types. This text mining approach in combination with a qualitative content analysis was used to examine unique motivational data from 472 entrepreneurial projects from three different entrepreneurship support programs in Norway and Sweden. Findings suggest that motivation of female and male entrepreneurs differ only slightly, while motivation of female entrepreneurs differs according to the different venture types. We thus contribute to a better understanding of entrepreneurial motivation and to a better understanding of why female entrepreneurs start a business. This can, for instance, benefit the improvement of future female entrepreneurship support programs.
Corporate Entrepreneurship (CE) has now evolved into an imperative innovation practice of established companies. Despite organizational design models for CE activities and companies' frequent initiation of new activities, effectively managing them remains a challenging endeavor which results in disappointment about the outcomes of CE and its early termination. We assume specific types of goals for CE as one element of this unresolved management issue. While both practice and literature address goals in different contexts, no uniform picture has emerged so far. Although goals are commonly used to categorize CE activities, they seldomly seem to be the core subject of investigation. Based on this preliminary analysis and consolidation, we put the goals of CE in focus. In a systematic literature review, we reveal aspects of goals to unmask the different types of goals and their underlying dimensions and characteristics. Our review contributes to a better understanding of goals by (1) organizing relevant literature on goals of CE in a specific classification process, (2) describing dimensions and attributes for a systematic classification of CE goals; and (3) providing a framework showing differences of goals for the CE context. We conclude with a discussion and hints for future research paths.
This paper compares novel methods to efficiently include input constraints using the nonlinear Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) approach. The MPPI algorithm solves stochastic optimal control problems and is based on sampled trajectories. MPPI results from the physical path integral framework. Sample-based algorithms are characterized by the fact that they can be computed in parallel and offer the possibility to handle discontinuous dynamics and cost functions. However, using standard MPPI the input costs in the Lagrange term have to be chosen quadratic. This fact is unfavorable for various real applications. Further, in standard nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) approaches hard box constraints on the control input trajectory can be treated directly. In this contribution, novel architectures based on integrator action are compared. The investigated input constraint MPPI controllers were tested on an autonomous self-balancing vehicle. Therefore both, simulation and real-world experiments are presented. This paper addresses the question of how the MPPI algorithm can be further developed to consider input box constraints. Comparison of Data-Driven Modeling and Identification Approaches for a Self-Balancing Vehicle

This paper gives a systematic comparison of different state–of–the–art modeling approaches and the corresponding parameter identification processes for a self–balancing vehicle. In detail, a nonlinear grey box model, its extension to consider friction effects, a parametric black box model based on regression neural networks, and a hybrid approach are presented. The parameters of the models are identified by solving a nonlinear least squares problem. The training, validation, and test datasets are collected in full–scale experiments using a self–balancing vehicle. The performance of the different models used for ego–motion prediction are compared in full–scale scenarios, as well. The investigated model architectures can be used to improve both, simulation environments and model–based controller design. A key objective of this research is to take a more detailed look at a central aspect of resilience in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A literature review and expert interviews were used to investigate which factors have an impact on the innovative capacity of start-ups and whether these can also be adapted by SMEs. First of all, it must be stated that there are considerable structural and process-related differences between start-ups and SMEs. These can considerably inhibit cooperation between the two forms of enterprise. However, in the same context, success factors and issues in the start-up sector could also be identified that can improve cooperation with SMEs. These and other findings are then discussed in both an economic and an academic context. This article was written as part of the research activities of the Smart Services Competence Centre (proper name: Kompetenzzentrum Smart Services), a central contact point for all questions in the area of smart service digitalization in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Here, companies can obtain information about various digital technologies and take advantage of various measures for the development of new ideas and innovative services (Kompetenzzentrum Smart Services BW: Über das Kompetenzzentrum, 2021).
Measuring cardiorespiratory parameters in sleep, using non-contact sensors and the Ballistocardiography technique has received much attention due to the low-cost, unobtrusive, and non-invasive method. Designing a user-friendly, simple-to-use, and easy-to-deployment preserving less errorprone remains open and challenging due to the complex morphology of the signal. In this work, using four forcesensitive resistor sensors, we conducted a study by designing four distributions of sensors, in order to simplify the complexity of the system by identifying the region of interest for heartbeat and respiration measurement. The sensors are deployed under the mattress and attached to the bed frame without any interference with the subjects. The four distributions are combined in two linear horizontal, one linear vertical, and one square, covering the influencing region in cardiorespiratory activities. We recruited 4 subjects and acquired data in four regular sleeping positions, each for a duration of 80 seconds. The signal processing was performed using discrete wavelet transform bior 3.9 and smooth level of 4 as well as bandpass filtering. The results indicate that we have achieved the mean absolute error of 2.35 and 4.34 for respiration and heartbeat, respectively. The results recommend the efficiency of a triangleshaped structure of three sensors for measuring heartbeat and respiration parameters in all four regular sleeping positions.
Monitoring heart rate and breathing is essential in understanding the physiological processes for sleep analysis. Polysomnography (PSG) system have traditionally been used for sleep monitoring, but alternative methods can help to make sleep monitoring more portable in someone's home. This study conducted a series of experiments to investigate the use of pressure sensors placed under the bed as an alternative to PSG for monitoring heart rate and breathing during sleep. The following sets of experiments involved the addition of small rubber domes - transparent and black - that were glued to the pressure sensor. The resulting data were compared with the PSG system to determine the accuracy of the pressure sensor readings. The study found that the pressure sensor provided reliable data for extracting heart rate and respiration rate, with mean absolute errors (MAE) of 2.32 and 3.24 for respiration and heart rate, respectively. However, the addition of small rubber hemispheres did not significantly improve the accuracy of the readings, with MAEs of 2.3 bpm and 7.56 breaths per minute for respiration rate and heart rate, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that pressure sensors placed under the bed may serve as a viable alternative to traditional PSG systems for monitoring heart rate and breathing during sleep. These sensors provide a more comfortable and non-invasive method of sleep monitoring. However, the addition of small rubber domes did not significantly enhance the accuracy of the readings, indicating that it may not be a worthwhile addition to the pressure sensor system.
Sleep is an essential part of human existence, as we are in this state for approximately a third of our lives. Sleep disorders are common conditions that can affect many aspects of life. Sleep disorders are diagnosed in special laboratories with a polysomnography system, a costly procedure requiring much effort for the patient. Several systems have been proposed to address this situation, including performing the examination and analysis at the patient's home, using sensors to detect physiological signals automatically analysed by algorithms. This work aims to evaluate the use of a contactless respiratory recording system based on an accelerometer sensor in sleep apnea detection. For this purpose, an installation mounted under the bed mattress records the oscillations caused by the chest movements during the breathing process. The presented processing algorithm performs filtering of the obtained signals and determines the apnea events presence. The performance of the developed system and algorithm of apnea event detection (average values of accuracy, specificity and sensitivity are 94.6%, 95.3%, and 93.7% respectively) confirms the suitability of the proposed method and system for further ambulatory and in-home use.
Healthy sleep is one of the prerequisites for a good human body and brain condition, including general well-being. Unfortunately, there are several sleep disorders that can negatively affect this. One of the most common is sleep apnoea, in which breathing is impaired. Studies have shown that this disorder often remains undiagnosed. To avoid this, developing a system that can be widely used in a home environment to detect apnoea and monitor the changes once therapy has been initiated is essential. The conceptualisation of such a system is the main aim of this research. After a thorough analysis of the available literature and state of the art in this area of knowledge, a concept of the system was created, which includes the following main components: data acquisition (including two parts), storage of the data, apnoea detection algorithm, user and device management, data visualisation. The modules are interchangeable, and interfaces have been defined for data transfer, most of which operate using the MQTT protocol. System diagrams and detailed component descriptions, including signal requirements and visualisation mockups, have also been developed. The system's design includes the necessary concepts for the implementation and can be realised in a prototype in the next phase.
The influence of sleep on human health is enormous. Accordingly, sleep disorders can have a negative impact on it. To avoid this, they should be identified and treated in time. For this purpose, objective (with an appropriate device) or subjective (based on perceived values) measurement methods are used for sleep analysis to understand the problem. The aim of this work is to find out whether an exchange of the two methods is possible and can provide reliable results. In accordance with this goal, a study was conducted with people aged over 65 years old (a total of 154 night-time recordings) in which both measurement methods were compared. Sleep questionnaires and electronic devices for sleep assessment placed under the mattress were applied to achieve the study aims. The obtained results indicated that the correlation between both measurement methods could be observed for sleep characteristics such as total sleep time, total time in bed and sleep efficiency. However, there are also significant differences in absolute values of the two measurement approaches for some subjects/nights, which leads us to conclude that the substitution is more likely to be considered in case of long-term monitoring where the trends are of more importance and not the absolute values for individual nights.
The principal objective of this study is to investigate the impact of perceived stress on traffic and road safety. Therefore, we designed a study that allows the generation and collection of stress-relevant data. Drivers often experience stress due to their perception of lack of control during the driving process. This can lead to an increased likelihood of traffic accidents, driver errors, and traffic violations. To explore this phenomenon, we used the Stress Perceived Questionnaire (PSQ) to evaluate perceived stress levels during driving simulations and the EPQR questionnaire to determine the personality of the driver. With the presented study, participants can categorised based on their emotional stability and personality traits. Wearable devices were utilised to monitor each participant's instantaneous heart rate (HR) due to their non-intrusive and portable nature. The findings of this study deliver an overview of the link between stress and traffic and road safety. These findings can be utilised for future research and implementing strategies to reduce road accidents and promote traffic safety.
Development of an expert system to overpass citizens technological barriers on smart home and living

Adopting new technologies can be overwhelming, even for people with experience in the field. For the general public, learning about new implementations, releases, brands, and enhancements can cause them to lose interest. There is a clear need to create point sources and platforms that provide helpful information about the novel and smart technologies, assisting users, technicians, and providers with products and technologies. The purpose of these platforms is twofold, as they can gather and share information on interests common to manufacturers and vendors. This paper presents the ”Finde-Dein-SmartHome” tool. Developed in association with the Smart Home & Living competence center [5] to help users learn about, understand, and purchase available technologies that meet their home automation needs. This tool aims to lower the usability barrier and guide potential customers to clear their doubts about privacy and pricing. Communities can use the information provided by this tool to identify market trends that could eventually lower costs for providers and incentivize access to innovative home technologies and devices supporting long-term care.
The development of automatic solutions for the detection of physiological events of interest is booming. Improvements in the collection and storage of large amounts of healthcare data allow access to these data faster and more efficiently. This fact means that the development of artificial intelligence models for the detection and monitoring of a large number of pathologies is becoming increasingly common in the medical field. In particular, developing deep learning models for detecting obstructive apnea (OSA) events is at the forefront. Numerous scientific studies focus on the architecture of the models and the results that these models can provide in terms of OSA classification and Apnea-Hypopnea-Index (AHI) calculation. However, little focus is put on other aspects of great relevance that are crucial for the training and performance of the models. Among these aspects can be found the set of physiological signals used and the preprocessing tasks prior to model training. This paper covers the essential requirements that must be considered before training the deep learning model for obstructive sleep apnea detection, in addition to covering solutions that currently exist in the scientific literature by analyzing the preprocessing tasks prior to training.
Recently published nonlinear model-based control
approaches achieve impressive performances in complex real-
world applications. However, due to model-plant mismatches
and unforeseen disturbances, the model-based controller’s per-
formance is limited in full-scale applications. In most applica-
tions, low-level control loops mitigate the model-plant mismatch
and the sensitivity to disturbances. But what is the influence
of these low-level control loops? In this paper, we present
the model predictive path integral (MPPI) control of a self-
balancing vehicle and investigate the influence of subordinate
control loops on closed-loop performance. Therefore, simulation
and full-scale experiments are performed and analyzed. Subor-
dinate control loops empower the MPPI controller because they
dampen the influence of disturbances, and thus improve the
model’s accuracy. This is the basis for the successful application
of model-based control approaches in real-world systems. All
in all, a model is used to design a low-level controller, then
its closed-loop behavior is determined, and this model is used
within the superimposed MPPI control loop – modeling for
control and vice versa.
In 3D extended object tracking (EOT), well-established models exist for tracking the object extent using various shape priors. A single update, however, has to be performed for every measurement using these models leading to a high computational runtime for high-resolution sensors. In this paper, we address this problem by using various model-independent downsampling schemes based on distance heuristics and random sampling as pre-processing before the update. We investigate the methods in a simulated and real-world tracking scenario using two different measurement models with measurements gathered from a LiDAR sensor. We found that there is a huge potential for speeding up 3D EOT by dropping up to 95\% of the measurements in our investigated scenarios when using random sampling. Since random sampling, however, can also result in a subset that does not represent the total set very well, leading to a poor tracking performance, there is still a high demand for further research.
Foil-air bearings (FABs) are predominantly used for high-speed, oil-free applications. Offering many advantages such as friction loss at high speeds, stability and price, they lack, however, load capacity as well as start-up and coast-down friction wear resistance.
The friction losses of FABs have been studied experimentally by many authors. In order to predict the friction and, consequently, the lifespan of a FAB, the start-up and coast-down regimes are modelled in such a way that allows for accurate, efficient simulation and later optimisation of lift-off speed and wear characteristics. The proposed simulation method applies the Kirchhoff-Love plate theory to the top foil mapping [20]. This system of differential equations is coupled with the underlying compliant foil to simulate the displacement due to the pressure buildup. Consequently, this coupled system allows for simulation from almost zero rounds per minute (rpm) to full speed. The underlying simulation model uses the finite difference method for spatial discretisation and a temporal explicit Runge-Kutta method.
Difficulties to overcome are the smooth combination of various friction regimes across the sliding surfaces as well as the synchronous coupling of Reynolds, deformation and kinematic equations with highly non-linear terms. Introducing an exponential pressure component based on Greenwood and Tripp’s theory avoids impingement between the rotor and foil.
In the past years, algorithms for 3D shape tracking using radial functions in spherical coordinates represented with different methods have been proposed. However, we have seen that mainly measurements from the lateral surface of the target can be expected in a lot of dynamic scenarios and only few measurements from the top and bottom parts leading to an error-prone shape estimate in the top and bottom regions when using a representation in spherical coordinates. We, therefore, propose to represent the shape of the target using a radial function in cylindrical coordinates, as these only represent regions of the lateral surface, and no information from the top or bottom parts is needed. In this paper, we use a Fourier-Chebyshev double series for 3D shape representation since a mixture of Fourier and Chebyshev series is a suitable basis for expanding a radial function in cylindrical coordinates. We investigate the method in a simulated and real-world maritime scenario with a CAD model of the target boat as a reference. We have found that shape representation in cylindrical coordinates has decisive advantages compared to a shape representation in spherical coordinates and should preferably be used if no prior knowledge of the measurement distribution on the surface of the target is available.
Random matrices are used to filter the center of gravity (CoG) and the covariance matrix of measurements. However, these quantities do not always correspond directly to the position and the extent of the object, e.g. when a lidar sensor is used.In this paper, we propose a Gaussian processes regression model (GPRM) to predict the position and extension of the object from the filtered CoG and covariance matrix of the measurements. Training data for the GPRM are generated by a sampling method and a virtual measurement model (VMM). The VMM is a function that generates artificial measurements using ray tracing and allows us to obtain the CoG and covariance matrix that any object would cause. This enables the GPRM to be trained without real data but still be applied to real data due to the precise modeling in the VMM. The results show an accurate extension estimation as long as the reality behaves like the modeling and e.g. lidar measurements only occur on the side facing the sensor.
This paper aims to apply the basics of the Service-Dominant Logic, especially the concept of creating benefits through serving, to the stationary retail industry. In the industrial context, the shift from a product-driven point of view to a service-driven perspective has been discussed widely. However, there are only few connections to how this can be applied to the retail sector on a B2C-level and how retailers can use smart services in order to enable customer engagement, loyalty and retention. The expectations of customers towards future stationary retail develop significantly as consumers got used to the comfort of online shopping. Especially the younger generation—the Generation Z—seems to have changed their priorities from the bare purchase of products to an experience- and service-driven approach when shopping over-the-counter. To stay successful long-term, companies from this sector need to adapt to the expectations of their future main customer group. Therefore, this paper will analyse the specific needs of Generation Z, explain how smart services contribute to creating benefit for this customer group and how this affects the economic sustainability of these firms.
As one of the most important branches of the industry in Germany and
the European Union, the mechanical and plant engineering sector is confronted with fundamental changes due to ever shorter innovation cycles and increased competitive pressure. This makes it even more important to increase the level of service components in business models with a low service level, which are still frequently found in SMEs. This paper is dedicated to the changes that the individual components of a business model have experienced and will experience. Special attention is paid to economic sustainability, since service business models can also positively influence the long-term nature of a business. Seven interviews conducted with relevant companies serve as the empirical basis of this paper. The analysed effects of smart services and active customer integration are structured and summarized within the three pillars of every business model (value proposition, the value creation architecture and the revenue mechanic).
Digitization and sustainability are the two big topics of our current time. As the usage of digital products like IoT devices continues to grow, it affects the energy consumption caused by the Internet. At the same time, more and more companies feel the need to become carbon neutral and sustainable. Determining the environmental impact of an IoT device is challenging, as the production of the hardware components should be considered and the electricity consumption of the Internet since this is the primary communication medium of an IoT device. Estimating the electricity consumption of the Internet itself is a complex task. We performed a life cycle assessment (LCA) to determine the environmental impact of an intelligent smoke detector sold in Germany, taking its whole life-cycle from cradle-to-grave into account. We applied the impact assessment method ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint and compared its results with ILCD 2011 Midpoint+ to check the robustness of our results. The LCA results showed that electricity consumption during the use phase is the main contributor to environmental impacts. The mining of coal causes this contribution, which is a part of the German electricity mix. Consequently, the smoke detector mainly contributes to the impact categories of freshwater and marine ecotoxicity, but only marginally to global warming.
This paper presents the integration of a spline based extension model into a probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter for extended targets. Using this filter the position and extension of each object as well as the number of present objects can jointly be estimated. Therefore, the spline extension model and the PHD filter are addressed and merged in a Gaussian mixture (GM) implementation. Simulation results using artificial laser measurements are used to evaluate the performance of the presented filter. Finally, the results are illustrated and discussed.
Motion estimation is an essential element for autonomous vessels. It is used e.g. for lidar motion compensation as well as mapping and detection tasks in a maritime environment. Because the use of gyroscopes is not reliable and a high performance inertial measurement unit is quite expensive, we present an approach for visual pitch and roll estimation that utilizes a convolutional neural network for water segmentation, a stereo system for reconstruction and simple geometry to estimate pitch and roll. The algorithm is validated on a novel, publicly available dataset recorded at Lake Constance. Our experiments show that the pitch and roll estimator provides accurate results in comparison to an Xsens IMU sensor. We can further improve the pitch and roll estimation by sensor fusion with a gyroscope. The algorithm is available in its implementation as a ROS node.
Sleep is extremely important for physical and mental health. Although polysomnography is an established approach in sleep analysis, it is quite intrusive and expensive. Consequently, developing a non-invasive and non-intrusive home sleep monitoring system with minimal influence on patients, that can reliably and accurately measure cardiorespiratory parameters, is of great interest. The aim of this study is to validate a non-invasive and unobtrusive cardiorespiratory parameter monitoring system based on an accelerometer sensor. This system includes a special holder to install the system under the bed mattress. The additional aim is to determine the optimum relative system position (in relation to the subject) at which the most accurate and precise values of measured parameters could be achieved. The data were collected from 23 subjects (13 males and 10 females). The obtained ballistocardiogram signal was sequentially processed using a sixth-order Butterworth bandpass filter and a moving average filter. As a result, an average error (compared to reference values) of 2.24 beats per minute for heart rate and 1.52 breaths per minute for respiratory rate was achieved, regardless of the subject’s sleep position. For males and females, the errors were 2.28 bpm and 2.19 bpm for heart rate and 1.41 rpm and 1.30 rpm for respiratory rate. We determined that placing the sensor and system at chest level is the preferred configuration for cardiorespiratory measurement. Further studies of the system’s performance in larger groups of subjects are required, despite the promising results of the current tests in healthy subjects.
Linear and nonlinear response functions (RF) are extracted for the climate system and the carbon cycle represented by the MPI-ESM and cGENIE models, respectively. Appropriately designed simulations are run for this purpose. Joining these RFs, we have a climate emulator with carbon emissions as the forcing and any desired observable quantity (provided the data is saved), such as the surface air temperature or precipitation, as the predictand. Like e.g. for atmospheric CO2 concentration, we also have RFs for the solar constant as a forcing — mimicking solar radiation management (SRM) geoengineering. We consider two application cases. 1. One is based on the Paris 2015 agreement, determining the necessary least amount of SRM geoengineering needed to keep the global mean surface air temperature below a certain threshold, e.g. 1.5 or 2 [oC], given a certain amount of carbon emission abatement (ABA) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) geoengineering. 2. The other application considers the conservation of the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). Using a zero-dimensional simplification of a complex ice sheet model, we determine (a) if we need SRM given some ABA and CDR, and, if possible, (b) the required least amount of SRM to avoid the collapse of the GrIS. Keeping temperatures below 2 [oC] even is hardly possible without sustained SRM (1.); however, the collapse of the GrIS can be avoided applying SRM even for moderate levels of CDR and ABA, an overshoot being affordable (2.).
For some years, universities in countries where the first language is not English choose English as the medium of instruction. In German universities, instruction in German is still the dominant form, which makes university study in Germany less accessible to international students. To attract international students and to improve career prospects for home students, many German universities offer programmes taught in English or in a combination of German and English. It is widely expected that the implementation of EMI-programmes leads to improvements in English language proficiency (ELP). However, it has emerged that substantial gains in ELP in EMI programmes will only occur as the result of content and language integrated learning.
Design of tension components

The paper gives an introduction as well as background information on proposed changes and amendments in EN 1993-1-11 “Design of structures with tension components”, implemented during the ongoing revision. Due to some deficits in the currently applicable standard this revision is not only limited to some restructuring and editorial changes, but includes also major technical changes in the following fields: safety concept and structural analysis, actions and loads, robustness and rep-arability, design of tension components and design of clamps and saddles.
Advanced approaches for analysis and form finding of membrane structures with finite elements

Part I deals with material modelling of woven fabric membranes. Due to their structure of crossed yarns embedded in coating, woven fabric membranes are characterised by a highly nonlinear stress-strain behaviour. In order to determine an accurate structural response of membrane structures, a suitable description of the material behaviour is required. A linear elastic orthotropic model approach, which is current practice, only allows a relative coarse approximation of the material behaviour. The present work focuses on two different material approaches: A first approach becomes evident by focusing on the meso-scale. The inhomogeneous, however periodic structure of woven fabrics motivates for microstructural modelling. An established microstructural model is considered and enhanced with regard to the coating stiffness. Secondly, an anisotropic hyperelastic material model for woven fabric membranes is considered. By performing inverse processes of parameter identification, fits of the two different material models w.r.t. measured data from a common biaxial test are shown. The results of the inversely parametrised material models are compared and discussed.
Part II presents an extended approach for a simultaneous form finding and cutting patterning computation of membrane structures. The approach is formulated as an optimisation problem in which both the geometries of the equilibrium and cutting patterning configuration are initially unknown. The design objectives are minimum deviations from prescribed stresses in warp and fill direction along with minimum shear deformation. The equilibrium equations are introduced into the optimisation problem as constraints. Additional design criteria can be formulated (for the geometry of seam lines etc.). Similar to the motivation for the Updated Reference Strategy [4] the described problem is singular in the tangent plane. In both the equilibrium and the cutting patterning configuration finite element nodes can move without changing stresses. Therefore, several approaches are presented to stabilise the algorithm. The overall result of the computation is a stressed equilibrium and an unstressed cutting patterning geometry. The interaction of both configurations is described in Total Lagrangian formulation.
The microstructural model, which is focused in Part I, is applied. Based on this approach, information about fibre orientation as well as the ending of fibres at cutting edges are available. As a result, more accurate results can be computed compared to simpler approaches commonly used in practice.
Nowadays, information technology (IT) is a strategic asset for organizations. As a result, the IT costs are rising and there is a need for transparency about their root causes. Cost drivers as an instrument in IT cost management enable a better transparency and understanding of costs. However, there is a lack of IT cost driver research with a focus on the strategic position of IT within organizations. The goal of this paper is to develop a comprehensive overview of strategic drivers of IT costs. The Delphi study leads to the identification and validation of 17 strategic drivers. Hence, this paper builds a base for cost driver analysis and contributes to a better understanding of the causes of costs. It facilitates future research regarding cost behavior and the business value of IT. Additionally, practitioners gain awareness of levers to influence IT costs and consequences of managerial decisions on their IT spend.
The digital transformation of business processes and the integration of IT systems leads to opportunities and risks for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Risks that can result in a lack of IT Governance, Risk and Compliance (IT-GRC). The purpose of this paper is to present the current state of the research project. With this, the Design Science Research approach based on Hevner is using. Based on the phase of Problem Identification and Objectives, this paper will deal with the development of an artefact and thus present the draft of the Design phase. The artefact will be developed by selecting relevant existing frameworks and standards and the identification of SME-specific conditions.
The development of a new product can be accelerated by using an approach called crowdsourcing. The engineers compete and try their best to provide the related solution based on the given product requirement submitted in the online crowdsourcing platform. The one who has submitted the best solution get a financial reward. This approach is proven to be three time faster than the conventional one. However, the crowdsourcing process is usually not transparent to a new user. The risk for the execution of a new project for developing a new product is not easy to be calculated [1, 2]. We developed a method InnoCrowd to handle this problem and the new user could use during the planning of a new product development project. This system uses AI concepts to generate a knowledgebase representing histories of successful product development projects. The system uses the knowledge to determine qualitative and quantitative risks of a new project. This paper describes the new method, the InnoCrowd design, and results of a validation experiment based on data from a current crowdsourcing platform. Finally, we compare InnoCrowd to related methods and systems in terms of design and benefits.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend towards a general contractor strategy for plant engineering companies. Multiple disciplines and departments must be administered in a joint project. In the process, different work results are often managed in various systems without any associative relationship. A possible way to address this complexity is to implement a specifically tailored PLM strategy to gain a competitive advantage. Maturity models as well as methods to evaluate possible benefits constitute increasingly applied tools during this journey. Both methods have been theoretically described in previous publications. However, this paper should provide insights in the practical application within machinery industry. Therefore, a medium-sized German plant engineering company serves as an example for determining the scope and value of a multi-national overarching Product Lifecycle Management architecture as the central piece of a future digitalization strategy. The company’s current maturity levels for several digitalization capabilities are evaluated, prioritized and benchmarked against a set of similar companies. This allows to derive suitable target states in terms of maturity levels as well as the technical specification of digitalization use cases. In order to provide profound data for cost justification the resulting benefits are quantified.
Digitization extends to all areas of people's lives and processes, including public administration and government technology (GovTech for short). However, there are various problems here, such as the inappropriate development of new application systems, that are to be solved efficiently by combining two aspects: methodical digitization according to the process-driven approach and the idea of an app store for processes. This simultaneously fuels a process competition to advance methodical process digitization in the EU. Furthermore, this study explains the target-oriented use of this “firing” within the EU and concludes with a proposal of a new 3-schema architecture standard for successful process digitization within the EU.
An IT-GRC approach in SME

The digital transformation of business processes and the integration of IT systems leads to opportunities and risks for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Risks that can result in a lack of IT compliance. The purpose of this research-in-progress paper is to present the current state of a IT-Governance-Risk-Compliance (IT-GRC) research-project. First, the results of an already conducted literature research will be discussed, combined with qualitative interviews (expert survey) of persons close to IT compliance. In the context of this paper, a first design approach will be developed by selecting relevant existing frameworks and standards and the identification of SME-specific conditions. The first design is intended to contribute a further artefact conception of tailoring approaches and standards and the creation of a guidance.
Dynamic Real-Time Range Queries (DRRQ) are a common means to handle mobile clients in high-density areas where both, clients requested by the query and the inquirers, are mobile. In contrast to the very well-known continuous range queries, only a few approaches, such as Adaptive Quad Streaming (AQS), address the mandatory scalability and real-time requirements of these so-called ad-hoc mobility challenges. In this paper we present the highly decentralized solution Adaptive Quad Streaming Flexible (AQSflex) as an extension of the already existing more theoretical AQS approach. Beside a highly distributed cell structure without data structures and a lightweight streaming communication, we use a multi-cell-assignment on limited pool resources instead of an idealistic unlimited cell-per-server assignment. The described experimental results show the potential of our local capacity balancing scheme for cell handover in a strongly decentralized setting. Leafs of a cell hierarchy define a kind of self-optimizing fuzzy edge for the processing resources in high-density systems without any centralized controlling or cloud component.
Dissipation of heat can be a major challenge when applying sensor systems outdoors under varying environmental conditions. Typically, complex software and knowledge is needed to optimize thermal management. In this paper it is shown how the thermal optimization of a LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensor can be performed efficiently. This approach uses standard CAD (computer aided design) software, which is readily available, and saves time and cost as the thermal design can be optimized before experimental realisation. A four-step process was developed and realized: (i) Measurement of the thermal energy distribution of the current sensor design; (ii) Simulation of the time-dependant thermal behaviour using standard CAD software; (iii) Simulation of a thermally optimized design. This was compared quantitatively with the original design and was also used for verification of sufficient increase in heat dissipation; (iv) Experimental realisation and verification of the optimized design. It could be shown that the optimized prototype shows significantly improved thermal behaviour in accordance with the predictions from the simulations. The new LiDAR sensor shows lower heat generation and optimized dissipation of thermal energy which proofs the applicability of the approach to complex sensors.
As fish farming is becoming more and more important worldwide, this ongoing project aims at the simulation and test-based analysis of highly stressed wire contacts, as they are found in off-shore fish farm cages in order to make them more reliable. The quasi-static tensile test of a wire mesh provides data for the construction of a finite element model to get a better understanding of the behavior of high-strength stainless steel from which the cages are made. Fatigue tests provide new insights that are used for an adjustment of the finite element model in order to predict the probability of possible damage caused by heavy mechanical loads (waves, storms, predators (sharks)).
Adjusting the friction response of the wheel-rail interface is a key factor in the mitigation of wear and rollingcontact fatigue (RCF) in rails. The use of top-of-rail (TOR) friction conditioners has the potential to reduce maintenance costs significantly. Unfortunately, conflicting results on the use of commercial TOR conditioners have been presented in the literature. In this work, the performance of commercial TOR conditioners and a laboratory-made formulation were tested, both on the lab scale and in field measurements. Friction results are discussed together with the structural and chemical analysis of the tested materials.
A novel implant system for bone elongation will be presented. With this technique, the body's own bone material, so-called callus, can be formed by gradual distraction of the tubular bones, thus achieving an extension of femur and tibia bones. The driving principle of this fully implantable bone lengthening system is based on a shape memory element. During the surgical treatment, the intramedullary nail serves to stabilize the severed bone and enables the formation of new, endogenous bone material to lengthen the limbs or to bridge bone defects. The intramedullary nail is implanted into the medullary cavity and fixed at both ends with locking bolts. A receiver coil implanted under the skin receives the necessary energy twice a day through high-frequency energy transport to activate the thermal phase transformation of the shape memory element. This gradually increases the bone gap by 0.5 mm each time and stimulates callus formation. Consequently, osteoblasts or osteocytes are formed in the area of the desired bone extension and load-bearing bone material is formed. Three nail prototypes have already been tested for their functionality in a cadaver study in a German clinic. Currently a redesign of this intelligent implant system is underway, focusing on a novel coil geometry, a monitoring sensor system and control technology and a novel connection technology for the drive components. With this intelligent implant system, it will be possible for the first time to lengthen the bones in a patient-friendly manner and to continuously monitor, document and evaluate the entire lengthening process.
Improving the tribological properties of Stainless Steels by low-temperature surface hardening

In this paper, we propose a novel method for real-time control of electric distribution grids with a limited number of measurements. The method copes with the changing grid behaviour caused by the increasing number of renewable energies and electric vehicles. Three AI based models are used. Firstly, a probabilistic forecasting estimates possible scenarios at unobserved grid nodes. Secondly, a state estimation is used to detect grid congestion. Finally, a grid control suggests multiple possible solutions for the detected problem. The best countermeasures are then detected by evaluating the systems stability for the next time-step.
The trajectory tracking problem for a fully-actuated real-scaled surface vessel is addressed in this paper by designing a backstepping controller with a multivariable integral action, considering the thruster allocation problem. The performance and robustness of this controller are evaluated in simulation, taking into account environmental disturbance forces and modeling mismatch, using a docking maneuver as a reference trajectory. Furthermore, a comparison between the backstepping controller and a nonlinear position PID-Control with flatness based-feedforward is also analyzed.
The code-based McEliece cryptosystem is a promising candidate for post-quantum cryptography. The sender encodes a message, using a public scrambled generator matrix, and adds a random error vector. In this work, we consider q-ary codes and restrict the Lee weight of the added error symbols. This leads to an increased error correction capability and a larger work factor for information-set decoding attacks. In particular, we consider codes over an extension field and use the one-Lee error channel, which restricts the error values to Lee weight one. For this channel model, generalized concatenated codes can achieve high error correction capabilities. We discuss the decoding of those codes and the possible gain for decoding beyond the guaranteed error correction capability.
Automotive computing applications like AI databases, ADAS, and advanced infotainment systems have a huge need for persistent memory. This trend requires NAND flash memories designed for extreme automotive environments. However, the error probability of NAND flash memories has increased in recent years due to higher memory density and production tolerances. Hence, strong error correction coding is needed to meet automotive storage requirements. Many errors can be corrected by soft decoding algorithms. However, soft decoding is very resource-intensive and should be avoided when possible. NAND flash memories are organized in pages, and the error correction codes are usually encoded page-wise to reduce the latency of random reads. This page-wise encoding does not reach the maximum achievable capacity. Reading soft information increases the channel capacity but at the cost of higher latency and power consumption. In this work, we consider cell-wise encoding, which also increases the capacity compared to page-wise encoding. We analyze the cell-wise processing of data in triple-level cell (TLC) NAND flash and show the performance gain when using Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. In addition, we investigate a coding approach with page-wise encoding and cell-wise reading.
Large persistent memory is crucial for many applications in embedded systems and automotive computing like AI databases, ADAS, and cutting-edge infotainment systems. Such applications require reliable NAND flash memories made for harsh automotive conditions. However, due to high memory densities and production tolerances, the error probability of NAND flash memories has risen. As the number of program/erase cycles and the data retention times increase, non-volatile NAND flash memories' performance and dependability suffer. The read reference voltages of the flash cells vary due to these aging processes. In this work, we consider the issue of reference voltage adaption. The considered estimation procedure uses shallow neural networks to estimate the read reference voltages for different life-cycle conditions with the help of histogram measurements. We demonstrate that the training data for the neural networks can be enhanced by using shifted histograms, i.e., a training of the neural networks is possible based on a few measurements of some extreme points used as training data. The trained neural networks generalize well for other life-cycle conditions.
In many industrial applications a workpiece is continuously fed through a heating zone in order to reach a desired temperature to obtain specific material properties. Many examples of such distributed parameter systems exist in heavy industry and also in furniture production such processes can be found. In this paper, a real-time capable model for a heating process with application to industrial furniture production is modeled. As the model is intended to be used in a Model Predictive Control (MPC) application, the main focus is to achieve minimum computational runtime while maintaining a sufficient amount of accuracy. Thus, the governing Partial Differential Equation (PDE) is discretized using finite differences on a grid, specifically tailored to this application. The grid is optimized to yield acceptable accuracy with a minimum number of grid nodes such that a relatively low order model is obtained. Subsequently, an explicit Runge-Kutta ODE (Ordinary Differential Equation) solver of fourth order is compared to the Crank-Nicolson integration scheme presented in Weiss et al. (2022) in terms of runtime and accuracy. Finally, the unknown thermal parameters of the process are estimated using real-world measurement data that was obtained from an experimental setup. The final model yields acceptable accuracy while at the same time shows promising computation time, which enables its use in an MPC controller.
The respiratory rate is a vital sign indicating breathing illness. It is necessary to analyze the mechanical oscillations of the patient's body arising from chest movements. An inappropriate holder on which the sensor is mounted, or an inappropriate sensor position is some of the external factors which should be minimized during signal registration. This paper considers using a non-invasive device placed under the bed mattress and evaluates the respiratory rate. The aim of the work is the development of an accelerometer sensor holder for this system. The normal and deep breathing signals were analyzed, corresponding to the relaxed state and when taking deep breaths. The evaluation criterion for the holder's model is its influence on the patient's respiratory signal amplitude for each state. As a result, we offer a non-invasive system of respiratory rate detection, including the mechanical component providing the most accurate values of mentioned respiratory rate.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of perceived stress on traffic and road safety. One of the leading causes of stress among drivers is the feeling of having a lack of control during the driving process. Stress can result in more traffic accidents, an increase in driver errors, and an increase in traffic violations. To study this phenomenon, the Stress Perceived Questionnaire (PSQ) was used to evaluate the perceived stress while driving in a simulation. The study was conducted with participants from Germany, and they were grouped into different categories based on their emotional stability. Each participant was monitored using wearable devices that measured their instantaneous heart rate (HR). The preference for wearable devices was due to their non-intrusive and portable nature. The results of this study provide an overview of how stress can affect traffic and road safety, which can be used for future research or to implement strategies to reduce road accidents and promote traffic safety.
Generating synthetic data is a relevant point in the machine learning community. As accessible data is limited, the generation of synthetic data is a significant point in protecting patients' privacy and having more possibilities to train a model for classification or other machine learning tasks. In this work, some generative adversarial networks (GAN) variants are discussed, and an overview is given of how generative adversarial networks can be used for data generation in different fields. In addition, some common problems of the GANs and possibilities to avoid them are shown. Different evaluation methods of the generated data are also described.
Sleep analysis using a Polysomnography system is difficult and expensive. That is why we suggest a non-invasive and unobtrusive measurement. Very few people want the cables or devices attached to their bodies during sleep. The proposed approach is to implement a monitoring system, so the subject is not bothered. As a result, the idea is a non-invasive monitoring system based on detecting pressure distribution. This system should be able to measure the pressure differences that occur during a single heartbeat and during breathing through the mattress. The system consists of two blocks signal acquisition and signal processing. This whole technology should be economical to be affordable enough for every user. As a result, preprocessed data is obtained for further detailed analysis using different filters for heartbeat and respiration detection. In the initial stage of filtration, Butterworth filters are used.
Determination of accelerometer sensor position for respiration rate detection: Initial research

Continuous monitoring of a patient's vital signs is essential in many chronic illnesses. The respiratory rate (RR) is one of the vital signs indicating breathing diseases. This article proposes the initial investigation for determining the accelerometric sensor position of a non-invasive and unobtrusive respiratory rate monitoring system. This research aims to determine the sensor position in relation to the patient, which can provide the most accurate values of the mentioned physiological parameter. In order to achieve the result, the particular system setup, including a mechanical sensor holder construction was used. The breathing signals from 5 participants were analyzed corresponding to the relaxed state. The main criterion for selecting a suitable sensor position was each patient's average acceleration amplitude excursion, which corresponds to the respiratory signal. As a result, we provided one more defined important parameter for the considered system, which was not determined before.
oday many scientific works are using deep learning algorithms and time series, which can detect physiological events of interest. In sleep medicine, this is particularly relevant in detecting sleep apnea, specifically in detecting obstructive sleep apnea events. Deep learning algorithms with different architectures are used to achieve decent results in accuracy, sensitivity, etc. Although there are models that can reliably determine apnea and hypopnea events, another essential aspect to consider is the explainability of these models, i.e., why a model makes a particular decision. Another critical factor is how these deep learning models determine how severe obstructive sleep apnea is in patients based on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Deep learning models trained by two approaches for AHI determination are exposed in this work. Approaches vary depending on the data format the models are fed: full-time series and window-based time series.
Sleep is essential to existence, much like air, water, and food, as we spend nearly one-third of our time sleeping. Poor sleep quality or disturbed sleep causes daytime solemnity, which worsens daytime activities' mental and physical qualities and raises the risk of accidents. With advancements in sensor and communication technology, sleep monitoring is moving out of specialized clinics and into our everyday homes. It is possible to extract data from traditional overnight polysomnographic recordings using more basic tools and straightforward techniques. Ballistocardiogram is an unobtrusive, non-invasive, simple, and low-cost technique for measuring cardiorespiratory parameters. In this work, we present a sensor board interface to facilitate the communication between force sensitive resistor sensor and an embedded system to provide a high-performing prototype with an efficient signal-to-noise ratio. We have utilized a multi-physical-layer approach to locate each layer on top of another, yet supporting a low-cost, compact design with easy deployment under the bed frame.
The importance of sleep for human life is enormous. It affects physical, mental, and psychological health. Therefore, it is vital to recognise sleep disorders in a timely manner in order to be able to initiate therapy. There are two methods for measuring sleep-related parameters - objective and subjective. Whether the substitution of a subjective method for an objective one is possible is investigated in this paper. Such replacement may bring several advantages, including increased comfort for the user. To answer this research question, a study was conducted in which 75 overnight recordings were evaluated. The primary purpose of this study was to compare both ways of measurement for total sleep time and sleep efficiency, which are essential parameters for, e.g., insomnia diagnosis and treatment. The evaluation results demonstrated that, on average, there are 32 minutes of difference between the two measurement methods when total sleep time is analysed. In contrast, on average, both measurement methods differ by 7.5% for sleep efficiency measurement. It should also be noted that people typically overestimate total sleep time and efficiency with the subjective method, where the perceived values are measured.
The trajectory tracking problem for a real-scaled fully-actuated surface vessel is addressed in this paper. A nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) scheme was designed to track a reference trajectory, considering state and input constraints, and environmental disturbances, which were assumed to be constant over the prediction horizon. The controller was tested by performing docking maneuvers using the real-scaled research vessel from the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz at the Rhine river in Germany. A comparison between the experimental results and the simulated ones was analyzed to validate the NMPC controller.
This paper presents a modeling approach of an industrial heating process where a stripe-shaped workpiece is heated up to a specific temperature by applying hot air through a nozzle. The workpiece is moving through the heating zone and is considered to be of infinite length. The speed of the substrate is varying over time. The derived model is supposed to be computationally cheap to enable its use in a model-based control setting. We start by formulating the governing PDE and the corresponding boundary conditions. The PDE is then discretized on a spatial grid using finite differences and two different integration schemes, explicit and implicit, are derived. The two models are evaluated in terms of computational effort and accuracy. It turns out that the implicit approach is favorable for the regarded process. We optimize the grid of the model to achieve a low number of grid nodes while maintaining a sufficient amount of accuracy. Finally, the thermodynamical parameters are optimized in order to fit the model's output to real-world data that was obtained by experiments.
Targetless Lidar-camera registration is a repeating task in many computer vision and robotics applications and requires computing the extrinsic pose of a point cloud with respect to a camera or vice-versa. Existing methods based on learning or optimization lack either generalization capabilities or accuracy. Here, we propose a combination of pre-training and optimization using a neural network-based mutual information estimation technique (MINE [1]). This construction allows back-propagating the gradient to the calibration parameters and enables stochastic gradient descent. To ensure orthogonality constraints with respect to the rotation matrix we incorporate Lie-group techniques. Furthermore, instead of optimizing on entire images, we operate on local patches that are extracted from the temporally synchronized projected Lidar points and camera frames. Our experiments show that this technique not only improves over existing techniques in terms of accuracy, but also shows considerable generalization capabilities towards new Lidar-camera configurations.
We are interested in computing a mini-batch-capable end-to-end algorithm to identify statistically independent components (ICA) in large scale and high-dimensional datasets. Current algorithms typically rely on pre-whitened data and do not integrate the two procedures of whitening and ICA estimation. Our online approach estimates a whitening and a rotation matrix with stochastic gradient descent on centered or uncentered data. We show that this can be done efficiently by combining Batch Karhunen-Löwe-Transformation [1] with Lie group techniques. Our algorithm is recursion-free and can be organized as feed-forward neural network which makes the use of GPU acceleration straight-forward. Because of the very fast convergence of Batch KLT, the gradient descent in the Lie group of orthogonal matrices stabilizes quickly. The optimization is further enhanced by integrating ADAM [2], an improved stochastic gradient descent (SGD) technique from the field of deep learning. We test the scaling capabilities by computing the independent components of the well-known ImageNet challenge (144 GB). Due to its robustness with respect to batch and step size, our approach can be used as a drop-in replacement for standard ICA algorithms where memory is a limiting factor.
The detection of anomalous or novel images given a training dataset of only clean reference data (inliers) is an important task in computer vision. We propose a new shallow approach that represents both inlier and outlier images as ensembles of patches, which allows us to effectively detect novelties as mean shifts between reference data and outliers with the Hotelling T2 test. Since mean-shift can only be detected when the outlier ensemble is sufficiently separate from the typical set of the inlier distribution, this typical set acts as a blind spot for novelty detection. We therefore minimize its estimated size as our selection rule for critical hyperparameters, such as, e.g., the size of the patches is crucial. To showcase the capabilities of our approach, we compare results with classical and deep learning methods on the popular datasets MNIST and CIFAR-10, and demonstrate its real-world applicability in a large-scale industrial inspection scenario.
Driver assistance systems are increasingly becoming part of the standard equipment of vehicles and thus contribute to road safety. However, as they become more widespread, the requirements for cost efficiency are also increasing, and so few and inexpensive sensors are used in these systems. Especially in challenging situations, this leads to the fact that target discrimination cannot be ensured which in turn leads to a false reaction of the driver assistance system. Typically, the interaction between moving traffic participants is not modeled directly in the environmental model so that tracked objects can split, merge or disappear. The Boids flocking algorithm is used to model the interaction between road users on already tracked objects by applying the movement rules (separation, cohesion, alignment) on the boids. This facilitates the creation of semantic neighborhood information between road users. We show in a comprehensive simulation that with only 7 boids per traffic participant, the estimated median separation between objects can improve from 2.4 m to 3 m for a ground truth of 3.7 m. The bottom percentile improves from 1.85 m to 2.8 m.
Systematic Generation of XSS and SQLi Vulnerabilities in PHP as Test Cases for Static Code Analysis

Synthetic static code analysis test suites are important to test the basic functionality of tools. We present a framework that uses different source code patterns to generate Cross Site Scripting and SQL injection test cases. A decision tree is used to determine if the test cases are vulnerable. The test cases are split into two test suites. The first test suite contains 258,432 test cases that have influence on the decision trees. The second test suite contains 20 vulnerable test cases with different data flow patterns. The test cases are scanned with two commercial static code analysis tools to show that they can be used to benchmark and identify problems of static code analysis tools. Expert interviews confirm that the decision tree is a solid way to determine the vulnerable test cases and that the test suites are relevant.
This policy brief presents the possibilities of using big data analytics for safe, decarbonised and climate-resilient infrastructure. The policy brief focuses on current constraints and limitations to applying big data analytics to the infrastructure ecosystem and presents several examples and best practices for different infrastructure sectors and at different policy levels (national, municipal) to highlight recommendations and policy requirements needed for deep digital transformation and sustainable solutions in infrastructure planning and delivery.
Virtual measurement models (VMM) can be used to generate artificial measurements and emulate complex sensor models such as Lidar. The input of the VMM is an estimation and the output is the set of measurements this estimation would cause. A Kalman filter with extension estimation based on random matrices is used to filter mean and covariance of the real measurements. If these match the mean and covariance of the artificial measurements, then the given estimation is appropriate. The optimal input of the VMM is found using an adaptation algorithm. In this paper, the VMM approach is expanded for multi-extended object tracking where objects can be occluded and are only partially visible. The occlusion can be compensated if the extension estimation is performed for all objects together. The VMM now receives as input an estimation for the multi-object state and the output are the measurements that this multi-object state would cause.
With the high resolution of modern sensors such as multilayer LiDARs, estimating the 3D shape in an extended object tracking procedure is possible. In recent years, 3D shapes have been estimated in spherical coordinates using Gaussian processes, spherical double Fourier series or spherical harmonics. However, observations have shown that in many scenarios only a few measurements are obtained from top or bottom surfaces, leading to error-prone estimates in spherical coordinates. Therefore, in this paper we propose to estimate the shape in cylindrical coordinates instead, applying harmonic functions. Specifically, we derive an expansion for 3D shapes in cylindrical coordinates by solving a boundary value problem for the Laplace equation. This shape representation is then integrated in a plain greedy association model and compared to shape estimation procedures in spherical coordinates. Since the shape representation is only integrated in a basic estimator, the results are preliminary and a detailed discussion for future work is presented at the end of the paper.
The use of deep learning models with medical data is becoming more widespread. However, although numerous models have shown high accuracy in medical-related tasks, such as medical image recognition (e.g. radiographs), there are still many problems with seeing these models operating in a real healthcare environment. This article presents a series of basic requirements that must be taken into account when developing deep learning models for biomedical time series classification tasks, with the aim of facilitating the subsequent production of the models in healthcare. These requirements range from the correct collection of data, to the existing techniques for a correct explanation of the results obtained by the models. This is due to the fact that one of the main reasons why the use of deep learning models is not more widespread in healthcare settings is their lack of clarity when it comes to explaining decision making.
Nowadays, the importance of early active patient mobilization in the recovery and rehabilitation phase has increased significantly. One way to involve patients in the treatment is a gamification-like approach, which is one of the methods of motivation in various life processes. This article shows a system prototype for patients who require physical activity because of active early mobilization after medical interventions or during illness. Bedridden patients and people with a sedentary lifestyle (predominantly lying in bed) are also potential users. The main idea for the concept was non-contact system implementation for the patients making them feel effortless during its usage. The system consists of three related parts: hardware, software, and game application. To test the relevance and coherence of the system, it was used by 35 people. The participants were asked to play a video game requiring them to make body movements while lying down. Then they were asked to take part in a small survey to evaluate the system's usability. As a result, we offer a prototype consisting of hardware and software parts that can increase and diversify physical activity during active early mobilization of patients and prevent the occurrence of possible health problems due to predominantly low activity. The proposed design can be possibly implemented in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and even at home.
Home health applications have evolved over the last few decades. Assistive systems such as a data platform in connection with health devices can allow for health-related data to be automatically transmitted to a database. However, there remain significant challenges concerning intermodular communication. Central among them is the challenge of achieving interoperability, the ability of devices to communicate and share data with each other. A major goal of this project was to extend an existing data platform (COMES®) and establish working interoperability by connecting assistive devices with differing approaches. We describe this process for a sleep monitoring and a physical exercise device. Furthermore, we aimed to test this setup and the implementation with a data platform in both a laboratory and an in-home setting with 11 elderly participants. The platform modification was realized, and the relevant changes were made so that the incoming data could be processed by the data platform, as well as visually displayed in real-time. Data was recorded by the respective device and transmitted into the data server with minor disruptions. Our observations affirmed that difficulties and data loss are far more likely to occur with increasing technical complexity, in the event of instable internet connection, or when the device setup requires (elderly) subjects to take specific steps for proper functioning. We emphasize the importance for tests and evaluations of home health technologies in real-life circumstances.
Healthy sleep is required for sufficient restoration of the human body and brain. Therefore, in the case of sleep disorders, appropriate therapy should be applied timely, which requires a prompt diagnosis. Traditionally, a sleep diary is a part of diagnosis and therapy monitoring for some sleep disorders, such as cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia. To automatise sleep monitoring and make it more comfortable for users, substituting a sleep diary with a smartwatch measurement could be considered. With the aim of providing accurate results, a study with a total of 30 night recordings was conducted. Objective sleep measurement with a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 was compared with a subjective approach (sleep diary), evaluating the four relevant sleep characteristics: time of getting asleep, wake up time, sleep efficiency (SE), and total sleep time (TST). The performed analysis has demonstrated that the median difference between both measurement approaches was equal to 7 and 3 minutes for a time of getting asleep and wake up time correspondingly, which allows substituting a subjective measurement with a smartwatch. The SE was determined with a median difference between the two measurement methods of 5.22%. This result also implicates a possibility of substitution. Some single recordings have indicated a higher variance between the two approaches. Therefore, the conclusion can be made that a substitution provides reliable results primarily in the case of long-term monitoring. The results of the evaluation of the TST measurement do not allow to recommend substitution of the measurement method.
In order to support entrepreneurs in the Business Model Innovation (BMI) process, practice-oriented frameworks such as the St. Gallen Business Model NavigatorTM (BMN) are considered to be a powerful tool. The aim of this paper is to identify strengths and limitations of the BMN when applied to start-ups in their early stages and to contribute to the optimization of the BMN in terms of applicability for start-ups. Furthermore, the paper aims to emphasize the importance of BMI for start-ups and the relevance of a supporting framework as well as formulating a unified catalogue of requirements of BMI frameworks for start-ups.
